LEADERSHIP & VOLUNTEER WORK

ULTIMATE FRISBEE CAPTAIN

May 2017- May 2019

  • Established a women’s Ultimate Frisbee team.

  • Developed game strategy by collaborating with co-captains and coaches.

  • Lead the team by example in commitment and effort during practices and tournaments.

  • Organized the tournament schedule and collaborated with other college teams to execute events.

I began practicing with the Muhlenberg Ultimate Frisbee Team in August of 2015. I quickly grew to love the team and began to develop my skills as a player on a higher level. I became a leader among the freshmen that joined the team alongside me, using my previous experience with the sport to help them when upperclassmen weren't available. My initiative was recognized by the coaches and upperclassmen and I became captain of the team in my Junior year. The responsibilities that came along with the position presented their challenges. They included coordinating field space with the college's athletic director, collaborating with my fellow captains and the coaches, and effectively communicating information with the rest of the team.

The duties fo a captain for this team did not stop there as I took it upon myself to start a women's team separate from the current coed team. This choice to focus on the women came with more responsibility for myself including scheduling separate practices, searching for and signing up for women's tournaments, and creating an official roster for our newly founded team with USA Ultimate.

Filling the role of captain for this team was both a joyous privilege and a challenge. Covering all the bases when creating the women's team proved to be difficult as I had never done it before, and was, at times, unsure of how to proceed. I learned a great deal through trial and error as well as success. While it was frustrating at times, I'll be forever grateful that I was able to lead the coed team while creating the women's team.

FRISBEE FRIDAY AT ROOSEVELT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - PROGRAM COORDINATOR

October 2016 - May 2018

  • Organized, planned, and lead all 24 after-school sessions.

  • Successfully presented to Muhlenberg College's Board of Associates for program funding and was awarded the full $400 requested.

  • Corresponded with the director of student activities for Roosevelt Elementary School to carry out the program.

Working with children is something that I have always enjoyed. When, at the end of my freshman year at Muhlenberg College, the opportunity to pilot this program presented itself, I jumped at the opportunity! I worked closely with the After-School Activities Coordinator, Nashira Williams, to plan scheduling and sign-ups for the elementary students, and attended the fall activities fair for their parents at the start of the school year. Not only was I working to recruit elementary school students to participate in the program, but I was also in charge of recruiting volunteers from Muhlenberg College. This included overseeing their registration and ensuring all volunteers met both local and state requirements by completing the appropriate paperwork. As I geared up for the upcoming season I communicated directly with both Nashira Williams and Muhlenberg's own Office of Community Engagement Director, Eveily Freeman to coordinate transportation and logistics for the program. I both planned and executed the program each session and led the volunteers to successfully carry out the program in a fun and engaging way for the elementary school students. Through spearheading the enormously rewarding Frisbee Friday program, I was able to both exercise both my organizational and leadership skills.

RESIDENTIAL ADVISOR

August 2016 - May 2017

  • Managed a dorm of 20 college freshmen creating 10+ engaging programs per year.

  • Managed crises effectively and communicated students’ needs to administrators and emergency response teams.

At the very beginning of the year, I hosted hall meetings each week where I presented policies and general information in a way that my residents would understand and remember. To relay this information, I presented at the meeting and would then email my residents to give them the information in an alternate format. I also made sure to answer any follow-up emails immediately.

From this experience, I gained skills in communicating information in a more effective way. My position has enhanced these communication skills by exposing me to situations in which I need to present information in different ways to reach various types of people. Both running hall meetings and planning hall programs have helped me develop my leadership skills. Specifically, during hall meetings, I am able to present information clearly and use my time wisely. I am able to keep the attention of my residents while they listen to me respectfully. Being a leader to the newest class at Muhlenberg College taught me how to approach residents in a way that commands respect while also remaining a resource and friendly face. Running meetings, presenting information, and keeping the respectful attention of your peers are all extremely important skills to have.
